Why OldSayings.info?
Purpose
"Old Sayings" are expressions of wisdom passed from one generation to the next. They are short observations, often humorous or cautionary, that capture lessons learned through experience.
Unlike quotations attributed to a particular person, old sayings belong collectively to the cultures and communities that repeated them, adapted them, and preserved their meaning.
This site is an effort to collect these sayings, explore their meanings, document variations, and preserve examples of how they have been used.
The inspiration for this site came from Mrs. Baxtor, my first grade teacher in 1983. As a class assignment, she asked us to interview our grandparents (or other adults) about old sayings and phrases they remembered, and compile them into a scrapbook.
Decades later, I realized these expressions represented something worth preserving: small pieces of shared experience and subtle wisdom passed between generations.
